Essential Fatty Acids good for digestive disorders

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs)

The term: “Essential” in EFA the term has classified essential because the body is unable to naturally produce them on its own. Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are necessary fats that people need and must be obtained through diet and are an excellent component for the digestive system. EFAs are long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids derived from linolenic, linoleic, and oleic acids. There are two types of Essential Fatty Acids and they are: Omega-3 and Omega-6. Omega-3 fatty acids are derived from Linolenic Acid, Omega-6 from Linoleic Acid.

Flax oil compared to fish oil

Flaxseed oil is from a plant form of linolenic acid, ALA (alpha linolenic acid), where fish oil contains the animal form, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). The body makes its own DHA and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) from ALA. ALA and compounds made from it are also needed in the body for a number of essential functions. Fish oil cannot provide ALA, and therefore deprives the consumer of this critical compound. However, most sources covering the different types of oil indicate that plant-based Omega-3s, or ALA, is the better choice. Flaxseed oil contains both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which makes flax oil a better choice.

What are Omeg-3 fatty acids?

Unlike the saturated fats found in butter, lard and other foods, omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated (the “good fat”).

3 nutritionally important omega-3 fatty acids: alpha-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Dietary sources of alpha-linolenic acid include flaxseeds, flaxseed oil, walnuts, hemp seeds, soybeans and some dark green leafy vegetables. Linoleic acid is found in high concentrations in corn oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, and canola oil.

Flax oil contains both Omegas, that's why it's a better choice. The Great Taste No Pain program gives many ideas and recipes with essential fatty acids.
